Over a million person-years of software development have gone into legacy, monolithic network operating systems used in data centers.  For decades, the number of viable options remained in the low single digits.  This area is now seeing a renaissance.  Thanks to the Open Compute Project, an open source, modular and layered network operating system architecture is emerging as an alternative. In this talk, teams from Google, Facebook and Big Switch will show how they are collaborating on some layers and innovating in others for their new network operating systems under the auspices of the OCP.  The three-way demo will show Google’s P4 runtime project, Facebook’s Open/R project and Big Switch’s ONL-based concept NOS for do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, all running on a single OCP Open Network Linux-based switch.  This talk will include announcements from several of the parties involved about contributions proposed to OCP’s Networking Track.
